What To Do When Your Child Clogs Your Toilet With A Toy

If you have a toddler at home, and you recently discovered they tried giving an action figure, vehicle, or another prized toy a ride down your toilet piping system, you will want to take fast action in removing it so damage does not become present. Removing an obstruction from your toilet's piping system may be able to be done on your own. Here are some tips you can use to rescue your child's treasured toy from its demise.

Turn Off The Water

Before you start working at getting your child's toy out of the toilet, turn off the water supply. This will ensure that if you walk away for any reason, the risk of additional water being placed in the bowl will be limited to what is in the back tank, minimizing the chance of an overflow as a result. The water supplied to your toilet can be shut off by turning the knob on the wall behind the unit.

Grab A Plunger

Usually a plunger is used to help unclog toilet paper and human waste from blocking the pipes so they make their way into the septic system. A plunger can also be helpful in dislodging a toy from the pipes. Simply place the rubber flange portion over the hole and push down and then pull up several times in a pumping motion. This will help suck the toy out of the pipes, possibly allowing it to float into the bowl where you can easily grab it.

Use A Snake

A plumber's snake is a tool that may be able to help you push the toy out of the bend at the opening of the pipe so it is within view. The tip of the tool can be inserted into the toilet bowl and unwound from the base in an attempt to push the toy from its trapped position. If you feel resistance as you use a plumber's snake, it is best to stop using it so you do not scratch the porcelain.

Call A Plumber

If you try the above tips and do not successfully dislodge your child's toy, it is best to call a plumbing company like Diamond Head Plumbing Inc for professional assistance. They will have the proper tools to take apart your toilet to remove the toy from the basin so it does not become pushed further into the piping system. Avoid flushing the toilet while waiting for help to arrive.
